Summer Assembly

Walking, Talking, Working – Queering Landscape & Liquid Ecology

11 –13 Juli 2025

The Summer Assembly will be a Walking Festival and invites you to walk, talk and act together – with artistic, culinary and scientific interventions in and around M.1 in Hohenlockstedt.

From 11 to 13 July 2025, we will explore our relationships with the nearby bodies of water together with international artists, researchers and local actors, crossing landscapes, encountering microorganisms, gardens and communities.

On Friday, from 10:00, we will focus on water in all its forms: Together with Dea López (Co. merr) & Emilio Hernández Martínez (Cocina CoLaboratorio) we will follow their playful research on carp (How to carp?). With Marta Musso & Riikka Tauriainen, we will take water samples from the local water bodies (Lohmühle und Rantzau) and explore the microbial diversity of the liquids in the Plankton Studio. Michael Hiltbrunner will give insights into ‘mutualism’ on the meadow by the pond and talk about symbiotic art.

On Saturday, from 10:00, we will traverse Hohenlockstedt with Field Narratives (Sascia Bailer, Andreas Doepke, hn. lyonga, Lene Markusen) in a literary, imaginative, and performative walk. We will meet neighbours, their gardens, fields, and animals, and linger for lunch in Wiebke Habbe's garden. On the way back to M.1, we will forage together with Seraina Grupp for her taste library, and students from the English seminar of Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel will lead a workshop on NatureCulture.
On Sunday, the exhibition and the Plankton Station will be open from 10:00 to 13:00.
From 14:00, the M.1 Summer Festival will take over with activities and contributions from the M.1 community.

The walks start on Friday and Saturday at 10:00 at M.1 in Hohenlockstedt.
We will be back at M.1 in time for dinner together at 18.30.
Dress for the weather, whatever it may bring.

Meanwhile on the culinary: Seraina Grupp is developing a sensory taste library that draws on the characteristics of the local environment. Ecotrophologist Marle Rudolph is ready to cook for us. Byungseo Yoo experiments with culinary and artistic methods of preparation – their results will invite you to taste and enjoy and will be incorporated into the communal lunch and dinner.
Food will be served while supplies last. Vegan options are the default.

The exhibition space will reveal the first results of the ongoing projects:
Lene Markusen's wall drawing is being continued, students from the Spatial Design programme at the Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design in Kiel are presenting their installation intervention, Camilla Berner's participatory project The Undiscovered Garden (Hohenlockstedt) , in collaboration with private gardens in Hohenlockstedt and the region, will be finding its way into the exhibition space (inauguration: Friday, 18:00 at M.1). Seraina Grupp will reveal the initial findings from the taste library and Marta Musso & Riikka Tauriainen are setting up a kid-friendly Plankton Studio, which invites visitors to bring their water samples in order to observe microbial life under the microscope. (Also open on Sunday from 11:00 to 13:00).

All are welcome to join at any moment.
The route will be disclosed closer to the event on the website.

    Inauguration: 11 July 2025, 18:00
  • Plankton Studio by Marta Musso & Riikka Tauriainen
An open, informal lab for exploring local water bodies through microscopy, drawing, and mapping—inviting all ages to discover and document the invisible microcosmos.

    Child-friendly water sampling ‘test’: 13 July 2025, 10:00–13:00
