Filmscreening and talk: MUSEOMICS & OYSTER RESEARCH

Film screening & discussion
MUSEOMICS & OYSTER RESEARCH

An evening at the intersection of art, science, and ecological practice.

As part of the Arthur Boskamp Foundation's exhibition project “Art as Ecological Practice,” the Kulturforum Kiel invites you to a film screening followed by a discussion. The focus is on species extinction, ecological interdependencies, and the fragile relationships between land and sea.
The film shown is an interview with evolutionary biologist Dr. Christine Ewers, filmed by Ewen Chardronnet. Her museological research on the historical oyster collection at the Zoological Museum of Kiel University examines the disappearance of the European oyster (Ostrea edulis) in the Wadden Sea. Using DNA from shells dating from 150 to 6000 years ago, she reconstructs genetic isolation, local adaptation processes, and the vulnerability of small populations in the context of global environmental change.

Afterwards, Christine Ewers will give a brief insight into her research. This will be followed by a conversation between her and Ewen Chardronnet, moderated by Ronald Kolb. Starting points include Karl Möbius' concept of biocoenosis, the complex interrelationships between oyster farming and coastal ecosystems, and current issues of biodiversity loss in the Anthropocene.

About the project
“Art as Ecological Practice” is a one-year, process-oriented exhibition project curated by Ronald Kolb at the Arthur Boskamp Foundation. Through assemblies, workshops, and discursive formats, it combines artistic research with scientific and local forms of knowledge. The focus is on the question of how ecological relationships - between humans, more-than-human actors, and social infrastructures - can not only be represented, but also experienced as a shared, situated, negotiated practice.

Short biographies

Dr. Christine Ewers is an evolutionary biologist. She uses genomic and novel museological techniques to understand how aquatic invertebrates have responded to human-induced changes in their ecology and environment.

Ewen Chardronnet is an interdisciplinary artist and author, working as a filmmaker, video artist, editor, producer, and curator. His work combines artistic and scientific research with transformative practices and narrative speculation. In 2015, he initiated the platform roscosmoe.org to support art projects in the field of marine environment and evolutionary biology.

Dr. Ronald Kolb (PhD) is artistic director of M.1 curate (2025/26) at the Arthur Boskamp Foundation. His work focuses on curatorial practices at the intersection of art, knowledge production, and social organization.
