Autorinnenlesung mit Clara Umbach und Marta Marx

On Saturday, 6 September, we invite you to a reading by authors Clara Umbach and Marta Marxas part of the Parents in Arts residency programme. In addition to the reading, the evening will also offer an opportunity for exchange on the topic of care in the arts, with the aim of exploring how we can develop fairer structures in the cultural sector. Prior to the reading, coffee and cake will be served at the M.1 Repair Café, and afterwards, all guests are welcome to join us for a barbecue in the garden.

Marta Marx and Clara Umbach will read from their own texts and provide insights into their work. The reading will be followed by a Q & A, moderated by Katja Schroeder (co-director of the Arthur Boskamp-Stiftung).

This year, the Parents in Arts programme by the Ministry of Culture and Media Hamburg is hosted in M.1 of the Arthur Boskamp-Stiftung in Hohenlockstedt. The programme was open to applications from artists and writers based in Hamburg who have parenting responsibilities. From a wide range of impressive submissions, the jury selected six fellows. In the visual arts category, Pia Schmikl, Lene Markusen, and David Fletcher were chosen. In the literature category, the fellowships were awarded to Marta Marx, Clara Umbach, and Julia Hosse.

Author Marta Marx, born in 1988, studied Biographical and Creative Writing at Alice Salomon University in Berlin and Social Work with a focus on Cultural Work in Hamburg. Her writing combines artistic processes with social topics such as mental health and motherhood. Her text Mutter, die gehtwas published in January 2025 in the anthology Eltern werden (Diogenes Verlag). During her residency, she will be working on her debut novel.

Author and visual artist Clara Umbach, born in 1982, studied Fine Art at the University of the Arts Berlin, the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts, and the University of Fine Arts Hamburg. She works across various media – text, ceramics, performance, film – and explores questions of identity and queer ways of life. In 2024, she co-authored the collective novel Wir kommen (Dumont) with 15 other writers. During the residency, she is completing her debut novel Pizza Orlando, which is due to be published in February 2026.

M.1 Repair Café
Repair, don’t replace: Once a month, a team of volunteers helps repair small electronic devices and clothing. At the same time, a knitting café takes place where people can share tips and tricks. Coffee and cake are available in exchange for a donation, and it's a great opportunity to connect with neighbours.
