Learning from Holo / Reading in Holo

On 15th February, Sascia Bailer will come to Hohenlockstedt to present her newly published book Caring Infrastructures. Her research on the role of care work in the cultural sector is based on the programme she realised as the artistic director of M.1 in 2019 and 2020 in Hohenlockstedt. This programme led to a substantial academic work, Sascia Bailer's PhD which came out in December 2024. We are very pleased that the launch of this publication will take place at M.1 – the place where her research originated.

In connection with Sascia Bailer's book launch, we will also inaugurate the M.1 Library. Waffles and drinks will be provided.

Inauguration of the M.1 Library
with Ulrike Boskamp
In 2023 and 2024, the M.1 Library was conceived and set up by Micha Bonk, former co-director of the foundation and librarian, and Ulrike Boskamp, art historian and still co-director. In addition to numerous publications by the curators and award winners of the foundation, the library contains specialist literature on curating, historical research on the region, artist publications, books by poet-doctors, and other literature. What makes the library special is that the books are not catalogued in the traditional way, but instead feature handwritten notes that tell the story of who or what brought the books to this place. This connects the books to the history of the house and its visitors. Anyone who uses the library is invited to add their own comments and explanations. The library can be visited during the M.1’s opening hours or upon request.

Book Launch: Sascia Bailer, Caring Infrastructures Book
presentation by Sascia Bailer followed by a conversation
Sascia Bailer will present her book Caring Infrastructures, in which she describes the current state of the cultural sector with regard to gender-specific inequalities. She advocates for the structural integration of care work in the cultural sector, not just as a thematic issue. Drawing from her work as the artistic director of the Arthur Boskamp-Stiftung 2019/20, she offers practical solutions for how art and care can and should go hand in hand in the future. Using examples from her practice at M.1, she provides insights into concrete micropolitical actions that can make gender equality and care work a reality in the arts. After the presentation of the book, all visitors are invited to engage in a conversation with the author.
Dr. Sascia Bailer is a researcher, author, and curator working at the intersection of care, gender, and contemporary art. In 2019/20, she realised a participatory programme on care work as artistic director at M.1 of the Arthur Boskamp Foundation. She currently works in collectives such as Mothers, Warriors, and Poets and the CARING CULTURE LAB, continuing her research on care work, motherhood, and structural change. Her PhD dissertation on feminist curatorial approaches – completed at the Zurich University of the Arts and the University of Reading – was published in November 2024 by transcript Verlag under the title Caring Infrastructures: Transforming the Arts Through Feminist Curating. Sascia Bailer has worked internationally at renowned art institutions such as MoMA PS1, the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, and the Vera List Center for Art and Politics.

Free entry

The event is open to everyone, whether or not they have care responsibilities. We are particularly excited to welcome those who participated in Sascia Bailer’s care programme in 2019/20. The M.1 café will be open for a cosy get-together before and after the event, and fresh waffles will be served.
